History

The catalyst for the creation of the Minnesota African American Museum came directly from the local African American community itself, according to founder Roxanne Givens. So many people felt not having a record of their history was a major impediment to community engagement, self-esteem and achievement.

Over several months a group of founders met to fulfill their vision of creating an innovative place for historical artifacts and cultural activities that would contribute to the civic, cultural and economic fabric of Minnesota. Then, one day, Givens came across the Coe Mansion. It was for sale and its new use was instantly clear – the museum. The rest, as they say, is history.
