Position Description Overview:
The Director of the Minnesota African American Museum and Cultural Center (MAAM), a 501c3, reports to the Board of Trustees.
The Executive Director is responsible for leadership and day-to-day operations of the (MAAM). The Executive Director provides leadership to the museum, its staff and volunteers; she/he implements a strategic plan to fulfill the museum's mission. Must promote marketing efforts for organizational strength and growth. The Executive Director oversees operations to ensure quality of services and cost- effective management of all resources. The Executive Director is responsible for raising funds to support the museums budget. It is preferred, but not required, that the Director be qualified as the: historical authority for the Museum.
In its embryonic stage, the newly renovated Minnesota African American Museum will officially begin tours in January 2013; after undergoing complete renovation during the past 12 months.
The position will provide the successful candidate with an opportunity to engage from the ground up in establishing the legacy of the MAAM. Including working in partnership with the Founders in establishing a governance BOD and appropriate governing committees.
The Founding Trustees seek a dynamic, experienced, forward –looking Executive Director who will welcome the challenge of launching the museum, by implementing an ambitious strategic plan. A position that initially will require performing multiple job functions, such as those required by the job of an archivist, curator, education/outreach coordinator, grant writer and collections manager.
The Executive Director will provide interpretive direction of programs, exhibitions and publications. The Executive Director will manage the Museums’ financial, human and physical resources and will represent the Museum to donors, partners and the community. Experience in museum work, fundraising, staff supervision and financial management is essential. Desirable traits include an MA degree in Museum Studies or a related field, work in a history museum, experience in non-profit organizational management, and work with a non-profit board.
Through effective supervision, the Executive Director will ensure that day-to-day operations, programs, exhibits and other activities are professionally and efficiently organized and administered. Maintain MAAM policies as they pertain to its mission. Recommend policies, where there may not be any--- and implement those that exist. Report to the Board of Trustees through the Board's President. Oversee the Museum's communication tools and social media, including its website.
Desired Qualifications:
A Masters degree in an academic discipline or extensive knowledge of the various disciplines involved in the operation of a museum is desired. Suitable areas of study and practice include but are not limited to the following: African American studies, history, curatorial methods, interpretation, accessioning, cultural resources management, museum administration. However, an exceptional candidate with a bachelor’s degree, along with extensive experience in museum administration and fund raising and management will be considered. Applicants should provide evidence of and must demonstrate aptitude for administration, governance, and finance. Other qualifications include strong communication, entrepreneurial and fund raising skills along with the ability to interact with diverse constituents. Three to five years’ experience preferred. Applicants from non Minnesota geographical areas, with stated experience will be strongly considered.
